Melbourne, Australia (Betting Express) - The sixth-seeded tandem of Svetlana Kuznetsova and Alicia Molik posted a straight-set victory Friday to win the doubles title at the Australian Open.
The Russian Kuznetsova, who is the reigning U.S. Open singles champion, and the Australian Molik downed the 15th-seeded American duo of Lindsay Davenport and Corina Morariu 6-3, 6-4 in a mere 56 minutes.
Kuznetsova, who was bounced from the singles draw in the quarterfinals by countrywoman Maria Sharapova, earned her 11th career doubles title, but first in a Grand Slam.
Molik, who vaulted into the top 10 in the world this week as a singles player, was also downed in a hard-fought three-setter against Davenport in the quarters. The local crowd favorite won her fourth career doubles crown and also captured her first major triumph.
Davenport, who is the No. 1 ranked singles player in the world, will battle American Serena Williams in Saturday's final, but might be running on fumes. The 28-year-old, who has battled injury problems throughout her career, has played a whopping eight sets of tennis and has been on the court for over 5 1/2 hours in the last two days.
The legendary Davenport was in search of her 36th career doubles title and was looking to complete the career doubles Grand Slam. Davenport, who now has six- runner-up finishes in doubles play at the Australian Open, had already captured a championship at the French Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open.
Morariu, who is Davenport's best friend, finally got back into a major final after she overcame a long battle with cancer. Morariu, who is a doubles specialist, was trying to win her 12th doubles crown and second Grand Slam title as she also won at the All-England Club in 1999.
