Athens, Greece (Betting Express) - The United States water polo team was eliminated from medal contention at the Athens Games on Monday after a 9-4 loss to Serbia and Montenegro.

After Saturday's 9-7 loss to Russia, the U.S. (2-3) needed a victory of two goals or more against Serbia and Montenegro to have a chance to make it onto the quarterfinals. It wasn't close.

The Americans managed just one goal in each of the four quarters, falling behind 4-1 midway through the match. Serbia and Montenegro posted a three goals in the third to go ahead 7-3, and the outcome was never in question.

Serbia and Montenegro (4-1) will face Spain (3-2) in the quarterfinals.
