Athens, Greece (Betting Express) - Cat Osterman struck out 10 batters in six shutout innings, and Crystl Bustos homered in the fourth to snap a scoreless contest, leading the United States to a 3-0 victory over Taiwan.
Osterman (2-0) gave up just four walks and one hit, and Lori Harrigan tossed a scoreless seventh inning to finish off the Americans' seventh straight shutout.
The U.S. has outscored its opponents 41-0 in seven games so far, and are already two games removed from clinching a spot in the weekend semifinals.
This one was scoreless until Bustos led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a homer over the wall in straightaway center field to make it 1-0.
"I was seeing the pitcher early and I knew what to look for," Bustos said. "So I saw it coming."
Jessica Mendoza's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth gave the U.S. a two- run cushion.
Osterman didn't surrender a hit until the sixth inning when Feng Yin Chen led off with a line-drive single to left field that just cleared Natasha Watley's glove at shortstop.
'I don't care about the no-hitter right now," Osterman said. "We want wins, and we want the gold medal."
Kelly Kretschman stroked an RBI triple off the center field wall in the sixth, and then made a diving grab in right field in the ninth, doubling off a Taiwanese player at first base afterwards. Harrigan gave up one more hit, but Taiwan stranded the runner.
"Amanda's catch was amazing," said Osterman. "All of us in the dugout were excited to see it. The fact that she came up with a double play was even better."
The U.S. women, two-time defending gold medalists, have won 77 straight games.
Canada also won Friday, beating Italy 1-0 to keep its hopes of a semifinal berth alive. Rachel Schill stroked the only hit for the Canadians, a triple in the third inning, and then scored on a sacrifice fly for the game's only run.
Lauren Bay (3-2) tossed a complete game two-hitter for Canada (3-4), which needs a Chinese victory over Japan tonight to qualify for a semifinal berth. Canada beat Japan on Tuesday, and thus owns the tiebreaker.
The Italians finished a disappointing Olympic tournament with a 1-6 record. Their only win came on Sunday, a 7-5 victory over China, but they scored just one run in the remaining six games.
