Los Angeles, CA (Betting Express) - The
Los Angeles Clippers bolstered their backcourt Thursday, acquiring guard Kerry Kittles and cash considerations from the
New Jersey Nets in exchange for a future second-round draft pick.
Kittles was selected by the Nets with the eighth overall pick in the 1996 NBA Draft. He competed in all 82 regular-season games for the third time in his career last season, averaging 13.1 points and 4.0 rebounds per contest.
"We are very pleased to announce the addition of Kerry Kittles, who is a talented player with a great work ethic," Clippers vice president of basketball operations Elgin Baylor said. "Kerry plays hard on both ends of the floor and has a great feel for the game. He is also a veteran player who brings a tremendous amount of playoff experience to our roster."
In 496 career games, the former Villanova standout averages 14.3 points, 3.9 boards and 2.6 assists per game. Kittles played an instrumental role in helping New Jersey to consecutive NBA Finals appearances in 2002 and 2003.
"Our objective all along has been to add talented players and we are very pleased with the acquisition of Kerry Kittles, who is the perfect fit for our team," Clippers head coach Mike Dunleavy said. "Kerry is a terrific defender, ball-handler and perimeter shooter who will enhance our team chemistry."
The 30-year-old Kittles has career playoff averages of 12.3 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 54 games. Kittles also ranks first all-time in Nets playoff history in games played (54) and three-point field goals made (66); second in three-point field goals attempted (196); third in field goals made (250), field goals attempted (590), steals (87) and minutes (1,734).
Kittles leaves the Garden State as the team's second all-time leading scorer with 7,096 points. He is also the Nets' all-time leader in three-point field goals made (679) and attempted (1,817).
"Kerry has been a model of professionalism since he came into the NBA in 1996," Nets CEO Rod Thorn said. "He was a key component in the Nets' success over the past three seasons, providing the team with transition speed, outside shooting and defensive quickness. We wish him continued success in the future."
Meanwhile, the Clippers renounced the rights to guard Quentin Richardson and will not match an offer made by the Phoenix Suns. Terms of the contract were not disclosed, but earlier reports stated that the deal is for six years and worth between $48 million and $50 million.
Originally selected out of DePaul by the Clippers in the first round (18th overall) of the 2000 NBA Draft, Richardson is coming off the best season of his four-year career. He played in 65 games for LA in 2003-04 and averaged career-highs in points (17.2 ppg) and rebounds (6.4 rpg).
Richardson has participated in 281 games during his career and owns averages of 12 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists. The 24-year-old has not yet played in the postseason during his NBA career.
