Phoenix, AZ (Betting Express) - The Arizona Diamondbacks have officially signed free-agent pitcher Jon Garland. Garland inked a one-year contract with a mutual option for 2010 while financial terms of the deal were not released. He was said to be looking for a multi-year deal after completing a three-year, $29 million pact that he signed with the Chicago White Sox before the 2006 season. Garland was traded to the Angels in November 2007 and spent last season with the AL West champs. "Jon has proven to be a durable, consistent starter," said Arizona executive vice president and general manager Josh Byrnes. "We feel that adding him to our rotation gives us championship-caliber starting pitching." The 29-year-old right-hander posted a record of 14-8 with a 4.90 earned run average in 32 starts last season. He has spent his entire nine-year career in the American League. Before last season, Garland had pitched only for the White Sox and helped Chicago to a World Series title in 2005. He was 18-10 with a 3.50 ERA and a career-best three shutouts that season. Garland has a career mark of 106-89 with a 4.47 ERA in 278 games, 255 of which have been starts. He's made at least 32 starts and pitched at least 191 innings in each of the last seven seasons. Garland fills the rotation spot created when Randy Johnson left to sign with San Francisco. He is joining a starting staff that is headed by former Cy Young winner Brandon Webb and Dan Haren.
