(Betting Express) - The Detroit Red Wings will try for their fifth straight win on home ice tonight, as they begin a three-game residency versus the Columbus Blue Jackets at Joe Louis Arena.
The Red Wings sport a 13-3-2 mark as the host this year, having won each of their last four home games. Their last victory in Motown came on December 30 versus Chicago in the opener of a home-and-home set. Detroit then picked up two straight road wins, including a victory in the 2009 Winter Classic at Wrigley Field on New Year's Day and a 3-2 shootout win in Minnesota on Saturday.
Pavel Datsyuk notched the lone shootout tally, beating Wild goaltender Josh Harding with a forehand shot. Chris Osgood, playing in his first game since December 15, then posted stops on Brent Burns and Mikko Koivu to seal the win.
Mikael Samuelsson and Johan Franzen recorded goals for the Red Wings, who have also won three straight and six of eight overall. Brian Rafalski had an assist to give him a goal and five helpers last week, earning him the NHL's second star.
Osgood made 33 saves in the win after missing time with a strained groin. Ty Conklin will start tonight and he is 13-5-1 on the season and 2-0-0 with a pair of ties and a 2.64 goals against average in his career versus the Blue Jackets.
Detroit leads the Central Division by eight points over Chicago and will also host Dallas and Buffalo on this stand.
The Blue Jackets stay on the road tonight after having a season-best four-game winning streak ended on Saturday versus St. Louis. Columbus had outscored its opponents by a 13-1 edge over the winning streak thanks to a franchise-record three straight shutouts by rookie netminder Steve Mason.
Mason then allowed just one goal in a 6-1 win over Colorado on Friday, but was tagged for a career-high five goals in Saturday's 5-2 setback to the Blues. Mason, who has never faced Detroit, ended with 22 saves on 27 shots faced.
Mike Commodore and Fredrik Modin both lit the lamp for the Blue Jackets, while Rick Nash had two assists. Nash earned first star honors on Monday after logging two goals and seven assists in four games.
Columbus will be without second-leading goal scorer Kristian Huselius tonight after he suffered an upper-body injury versus the Blues. Huselius has 12 goals and 25 points in 38 games this year.
Columbus is 3-1 on a six-game road trip that ends in Washington on Friday. The Blue Jackets are 7-11-3 on the road this season.
The Red Wings have won four straight over the Jackets, including a 5-3 home win in the lone meeting between the two clubs. Detroit has also won three straight and five of its last six as the host in the series.
