Baton Rouge, LA (Betting Express) - John Chavis was named the defensive coordinator for the LSU Tigers on Monday. A 31-year coaching veteran, Chavis began his career on the sidelines as a graduate assistant at Tennessee in 1979. After a year he moved to Alabama A&M to serve as the defensive line coach from 1980-1983. Chavis then jumped to Alabama State for two years, serving as the defensive coordinator before going back to Alabama A&M from 1986-1988. Chavis then returned to Tennessee in 1989 and served as the defensive line and linebackers coach. He held that position until he was promoted to defensive coordinator in 1995, where he had been since changing SEC schools. Over the 52-year-old Chavis' 14 seasons as the Vols' defensive coordinator, Tennessee's defense ranked in the top four in the SEC in total defense 10 times. In addition, the Vols have participated in 12 bowl games since 1995 including three appearances in the BCS bowls. "John Chavis is a tremendous coach who has had a great deal of success over a long period of time in the SEC," LSU head coach Les Miles said. "You look back at what he's been able to accomplish defensively at Tennessee over the past 14 years and it's hard not to be impressed."
