Chapel Hill, NC (Betting Express) - Tyrese Rice scored 25 points, and added eight assists and five rebounds, as Boston College upended top-ranked North Carolina, 85-78, dealing the Tar Heels their first loss in the ACC opener for both schools.
Rakim Sanders contributed 22 points, a career-high seven steals, and grabbed six boards for Boston College (13-2, 1-0 ACC), which has won 10 consecutive games. Reggie Jackson scored 17 in the win for the Eagles.
The Tar Heels (13-1, 0-1) had not only won each of their games this season, but had done so by double digits. But UNC fell after making just 3-of-16 three-pointers in the second half and 15-of-27 free throws overall.
Tyler Hansbrough finished with 21 points and nine boards for the Tar Heels, while Wayne Ellington added 16 points and Ty Lawson 10 in the loss.
Boston College led by six at halftime, and held a slight lead through the opening portions of the second half. But after an Ed Davis dunk brought UNC within 58-56, the Eagles went on a 12-2 run to get their lead into double digits.
Joe Trapani began the surge with a three-pointer, and Jackson followed with a bucket after a Sanders steal. Hansbrough stemmed the tide briefly with a pair of free throws, but Jackson countered with a trey. A basket each from Sanders and Jackson capped the burst, putting BC ahead 70-58 just before the midway point of the half.
Moments later, a Trapani basket gave the Eagles a 74-60 advantage, and they continued to hold a double-digit lead, going up 78-63 on a Rice jumper with 6:22 left. Ellington followed with a quick trey, though, and UNC had opportunities to bring its lead to single digits at the foul line.
But Lawson made just one of two with 5:49 left and Hansbrough missed the front end of a 1-and-1 moments later. After Danny Green got the rebound of that miss, he went to the line after being fouled on a put-back attempt, but made only 1-of-2 to make it a 78-68 game with 5:17 remaining.
After a series of missed shots from both schools, Sanders missed two free throws, allowing Green to get UNC's deficit to 78-71 with a three-pointer. But as the clock rolled under four minutes, Corey Raji added a basket and Rice followed with two free throws for an 82-71 advantage.
UNC, which outrebounded BC 50-40, missed its next three shots before Will Graves had a tip-in. After three more misses -- all treys -- for UNC, Ellington deposited a transition bucket to get the Tar Heels within 82-75 with 1:41 left.
Hansbrough went to the line twice before the one-minute mark, but made just 1- of-2 each time. The second free throw made it a five-point affair with 1:14 left.
UNC misfired on two more three-pointers before Hansbrough again got to the stripe, and made one with 46.7 ticks left to bring his team within four. But Rice found his way to the line with 27.7 seconds left, and made both to extend BC's edge to six.
Ellington and Green then each missed a triple down the stretch, as the Eagles held on for the win.
UNC went on a 13-0 run early in the contest to erase a seven-point deficit. Bobby Frasor capped the surge with a three-pointer that put the Tar Heels up 18-12 with a little under 14 minutes still to play in the half.
But Boston College later ripped off eight points in a row, taking a 33-31 lead on a Rice trey.
The Eagles continued to hold a slight lead, ending the first half with a Jackson layup and Sanders triple to take a 46-40 advantage into the intermission.
