Charlotte, NC (Betting Express) - Carolina quarterback Jake Delhomme agreed to a five-year extension on Thursday that will keep him in a Panthers uniform through the 2009 season. "We're thrilled to have Jake," said Carolina general manager Marty Hurney. "It's a five-year extension, so it's a six-year deal. We're just thrilled to have him here and he'll be here hopefully for the rest of his career. It's been a great fit and we're looking forward to the next six years." The five-year deal is reportedly worth $38 million, including a $12 million signing bonus. Delhomme earned the new contract after completing 266-of-449 passes for 3,219 yards and 19 touchdowns last season en route to an appearance in the Super Bowl. The 29-year-old Delhomme started the 2003 campaign as the backup to veteran Rodney Peete, but by Week 2 Delhomme took over the starting job. "It's funny how things work out," said Delhomme. "The good Lord put me here in Carolina. It's just been a great fit. I'm happy as can be here. My family's happy as can be. I'm 29 years old and I don't see myself playing in another color. I want to retire a Panther. Hopefully, I can do that." Prior to last season, Delhomme spent five years in New Orleans and only made two starts in his career. In 22 career games, including 17 starts, Delhomme has completed 316-of-535 passes for 3,853 yards with 22 touchdowns and 21 interceptions. "Everybody in the league tries to identify their quarterback," said head coach John Fox. "Once you identify him, getting him locked up for the future is paramount to your success."
