Cincinnati, OH (Betting Express) - University of Cincinnati athletic director Bob Goin announced Monday that Dan Peters will guide the men's basketball team while head coach Bob Huggins serves his indefinite suspension.

Huggins was placed on mandatory suspension by the school on Saturday following his arrest earlier in the week for drunk driving. He was stopped in Fairfax, a suburb of Cincinnati, after police noticed that he was driving erratically. After getting pulled over, police say his speech was slurred and he smelled of alcohol.

The coach was taken into custody and later released when his wife arrived to pick him up. Huggins, who will continue to be paid during the suspension, apologized during a Friday evening news conference.

Goin said that the university hasn't decided specifically what Huggins must do to be reinstated but stated that he wanted the coach back for the upcoming season.

The 50-year-old Huggins, who is preparing for his 16th season at Cincinnati, is one of the winningest active coaches in Division I, having compiled a 542-191 record in 23 seasons. He is 374-119 as Cincinnati's head coach, including a 25-7 mark last year. Huggins has directed UC to postseason play in each of his 15 seasons there.

He also coached at Akron for five years before joining Cincinnati and spent three years at NAIA Walsh College.

The 49-year-old Peters has been on the Cincinnati staff for the past five seasons, serving as associate head coach for the past two years.

Peters has some previous experience running the Bearcats' program, as he took over during the preseason of the 2002-03 campaign while Huggins was recovering from a heart attack.

"I plan to continue to build on the tradition of excellence that has been established here," said Peters. "I look forward to working closely with our staff and our players. We expect UC basketball having another banner season, one in which we compete for a conference championship and postseason play."

Peters made his debut in the college ranks as an aide to Huggins at Walsh College in 1980. Three years later, Peters succeeded Huggins as head coach and directed Walsh to a 28-4 record.

He left Walsh in 1988 after compiling a 116-39 record. Following stints as an assistant at Western Carolina (1988-89) and Akron (1989-90), Peters became head coach at St. Joseph's College in Indiana, where he went 43-14 over two seasons.

Peters was then the head coach at Youngstown State for six years before joining the Cincinnati program.
