New York, NY (Betting Express) - Tampa Bay Devils Rays outfielder Jose Cruz, Jr. was named the American League Player of the Week for the period of May 17-23. Cruz, who hit .438 (7-for-16), led the majors with a .609 on-base percentage, and paced the AL with a 1.063 slugging percentage, sparked the Devil Rays to their first four-game winning streak of the season. The eight-year veteran scored six runs, notched 17 total bases, smacked two homers and drove in eight runs to earn his third weekly award. Cruz is the first Devil Ray to earn weekly honors since Greg Vaughn on June 10, 2001,and the seventh in franchise history. Other candidates for AL Player of the Week were Baltimore's Melvin Mora, Paul Konerko and Frank Thomas of the Chicago White Sox, Boston's Manny Ramirez and Tim Wakefield, Minnesota's Matthew LeCroy, Oakland's Mark Mulder and Anaheim's David Eckstein.
