Birmingham, AL (Betting Express) - Former Alabama head
football coach Mike Price has sued school president Robert Witt, claiming Witt's actions led to his dismissal after a trip to a strip club last summer.
The suit, which demands a monetary award, was filed in court on Monday and accuses Witt of fraud and misrepresentation.
Price's attorney Stephen Heninger said that the suit was filed stemming from Witt's deposition in the coach's lawsuit against Sports Illustrated for libelous and slanderous comments. Comments were made recently that Witt demanded the Athletics Committee of the Board of Trustees fire Price or he would resign as the school's president.
A former Weber State and Washington State head coach, Price was fired as the Crimson Tide's coach when he came under scrutiny after it was reported that he was drinking heavily while at a strip club in Pensacola, Florida on April 16. Price was in Florida for a golf event.
Price had appealed his firing, but a faculty panel rejected his request for a hearing.
The 57-year-old Price had agreed to a seven-year contract worth $10 million with Alabama, but never signed it. The deal had a clause saying he could be fired for any behavior "that brings (the) employee into public disrepute, contempt, scandal or ridicule or that reflects unfavorably upon the reputation or the high moral or ethical standards of the University."
Price led the Cougars to back-to-back 10-win seasons and a Rose Bowl berth last season. He was to have been Alabama's sixth head coach since Bear Bryant retired after the 1981 season.
His career record as a college head coach is 129-121 in 22 seasons. Price was 46-44 at Weber State before his arrival in Pullman. In 14 seasons as the head coach at Washington State, Price compiled an 83-77 mark.
Alabama hired Miami Dolphins assistant Mike Shula as its new coach on May 8.
