Bourdais on provisional pole in Mexico City

Mexico City, Mexico (Betting Express) - Series champion Sebastien Bourdais captured the provisional pole for Sunday's Gran Premio Tecate on the 2.48- mile, 15-turn Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez road course with a qualifying time of one minute, 24.698 seconds (117.906 m.p.h.).

The pole win gives Bourdais one championship point and a guaranteed front row starting position.

Bourdais beat out Will Power (1:25.199), Justin Wilson (1:25.221), Oriol Servia (1:25.436) and Simon Pagenaud (1:25.952).

Mario Dominguez and fellow Mexican David Martinez will be among the favorites at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. Martinez finished 10th in his Australian debut.

It will also be the final look for Champ Car fans at four-time champion Bourdais as he is set to embark on his Formula One career in 2008 with Toro Rosso. The Frenchman has put together quite a resume in Champ Car World Series racing.

In 72 starts, the Bourdais earned an amazing 28 poles, 30 wins (41.67%) and 43 podiums. He was even better in 2007 winning seven of 13 events (53.84%). Bourdais' winning percentage dwarfs those of the all-time series greats: A.J. Foyt (67 wins in 369 starts = 18.16%), Mario Andretti (52 wins, 12.77%), Michael Andretti (42 wins, 13.59%) and Al Unser 39 wins, 12.62%).

The race is scheduled to drop the green flag on Sunday at 2 p.m. (et).
