Mexico City, Mexico (Betting Express) - Justin Wilson captured Sunday's Gran Premio Telmex/Tecate Champ Car race in Mexico City, Mexico. The No.9 RuSport crossed the finish line 3.936 seconds ahead of A.J. Allmendinger.
The victory was Wilson's second of the season and second of his Champ Car career.
Wilson, who started on the pole, brought the field to the green flag and after being fastest in qualifying was determined to prove that it wasn't a fluke. Along with RuSports teammate A.J. Allmendinger, the pair began to pull away from the field. They led two-time series champion Sebastien Bourdais by almost five seconds.
But after the first dozen laps, Bourdais began to reel the leaders in. He was within 1.608 seconds when Ronnie Bremer suffered a huge accident on lap 20 bringing out a full-course yellow flag.
While waiting to get back to green, Bourdais' Newman-Haas race car began to have electrical problems and the team brought him in to change the ECU (electronic control unit).
Leading the race was Rodolfo Lavin and Tracy. They didn't pit on the caution because they had already pitted earlier in the race. Wilson re-entered the track after his stop in third place.
The race went back to green on lap 25 and it wasn't long before Wilson returned to the top of the charts. Allmendinger moved into second after Champ Car officials black-flagged Tracy for blocking.
At the mid-point of the race, Wilson held a 4.458-second lead over Allmendinger and the pair held more than nine seconds over third place Cristiano da Matta.
Wilson continued to expand on his lead, reaching 7.313 seconds on lap 43. He pitted for the final time on lap 48 with a 16.481-second lead and re- entered the track still at the top of the charts.
But Allmendinger wasn't satisfied with a second-place run and he began to put pressure on his teammate. With the aid of a caution, Allmendinger move to within less than a second of Wilson as the drivers reached the 60-lap mark - 10 to go.
Lap 62 saw 2002 series champion da Matta and current series champion Bourdais end each other's chances by coming together in turn one. Bourdais' day was over, but da Matta continued on after replacing a tire.
When the field went back to green, Wilson quickly jumped out to a 1.404 lead with four laps to go and 2.210 second just a lap later.
He took the checkered flag easily with teammate Allmendinger in second place.
Tracy, Oriol Servia and Timo Glock completed the top-five.
The first race of 2006 is scheduled for April 9th on the streets of Long Beach, California.
