Fontana, CA (Betting Express) - Dario Franchitti captured Sunday's IndyCar season finale, the Toyota Indy 400 at the California Speedway. The No.27 Andretti Green Racing Honda crossed the finish line 0.1117 seconds ahead of teammate Tony Kanaan.

The victory was Franchitti's second of the season and fourth of his IndyCar career.

"It was a good team effort, we all work well together," said Franchitti.

Franchitti brought the field to the green flag, but with such close racing at the two-mile oval, led just the first three laps before yielding the top spot to Tomas Scheckter.

Scheckter continued to lead but on lap 31 A.J. Foyt IV spun out and hit the outside wall very hard. He was taken out on a stretcher and went to the local hospital but was said to be "awake and alert."

Kanaan and Sam Hornish Jr. both beat Scheckter off pit road to drop the South African driver to third place after 36 laps. Franchitti joined the group just after the race restarted on lap 43.

But by lap 64, Scheckter was back on top with a move past Kanaan.

The drivers were racing particularly hard early in the race because there was rain in the area and the race might not go the full distance.

Scheckter was the leader at the 100-lap mark, the point at which the race became official. He led the majority of the laps (57) in the first half of the race.

But the rain was still holding off and the race continued on towards its scheduled 200 laps.

Scheckter kept putting down 217+ m.p.h. laps and led newly crowned series champion Dan Wheldon and Franchitti as the field pitted with about 77 laps to go.

But Scheckter stalled his car on the pit stop leaving him in 16th place. He didn't panic though and by lap 140 the No.4 Pennzoil Panther Chevrolet was back up to sixth place and in the middle of the fight.

Franchitti led three Andretti Green Racing drivers as the field passed the 160-lap mark. They were still that way when Kosuke Matsuura crashed while on pit lane bringing out a caution. It bunched up the field for the final 30-lap run to the finish.

With 15 laps to go, Danica Patrick and Jaques Lazier came together and it brought out another yellow flag. It appeared that Lazier slid up the track into Patrick to start the incident.

The caution meant that the race would be a nine-lap shootout to the checkered flag.

On the restart,Kanaan brought his car side-by-side with Franchitti and the two went all-out for the win. With Kanaan on the outside and Franchitti on the inside they posted lap after lap. They were still side-by-side as they saw the white flag to signify the final lap.

Franchitti held the inside line all the way around the track and with Kanaan still on his outside he took the checkered flag about three feet ahead of his AGR teammate.

Vitor Meira, Scott Sharp and Sam Hornish Jr. completed the top-five.

The first race of 2006 is set for Sunday, March 26th at the Homestead-Miami Speedway.
