No titles for you: Castillo misses weight

Las Vegas, NV (Betting Express) - The Jose Luis Castillo-Diego Corrales rematch will still take place on Saturday night at the Thomas & Mack Center, but with a catch. The WBO and WBC lightweight titles that currently belong to Corrales will not be on the line.

At weigh-ins on Friday, Castillo tipped the scales over the 135-pound limit, voiding any chance at winning the titles in a rematch of an epic bout that occurred earlier this year.

Castillo weighed in two pounds over the limit and failed to lose the weight after being given time to do so. Corrales, on the other hand, came in at 135 pounds.

In a twist only found in boxing, Castillo's personal physician Armando Barak ended up getting suspended and fined by the Nevada boxing authority during the weigh-in when he attempted to lighten the scale by putting his foot under it.

As a result of Castillo's weight, it took the promoters of the two fighters to negotiate a new deal. Now, Castillo will have to weigh-in five hours before the fight on Saturday night and have to come in under 147 pounds or be fined $75,000 for each pound over.

Corrales won the WBC title from Castillo with a technical knockout win on May 7 at Mandalay Bay.

The American, Corrales, comes into the match having won his last three fights, including his victory over Castillo. He scored a TKO over Acelino Freitas, who came into the fight unbeaten, on August 7, 2004 and won a split decision over Joel Casamayor in March of 2004.

Castillo, meanwhile, had won his previous six fights before the loss to Corrales. The Mexican captured the then-vacant WBC title with a unanimous decision win over Juan Lazcano at MGM Grand in June of 2004.

The last time these two fighters hooked up, they delivered a classic bout, as the scheduled 12-round fight finished in climatic fashion when Corrales mounted a comeback in the 10th round after it looked like Castillo had him beaten.

During the 10th round, Castillo sent Corrales to the canvas after connecting with a vicious left hook. After taking a standing eight count, and still appearing woozy from the knockdown, Corrales was sent to the mat again, courtesy of another left hook from Castillo.

Corrales then began his comeback as he connected on a few jabs in the center of the ring before Castillo backed himself up against the ropes in defense of Corrales' attack. However, Corrales began unloading on Castillo and eventually caught the Mexican with a devastating left hand that lowered his head. While the shot didn't send Castillo to the floor, it caused enough damage that referee Tony Weeks stopped the fight.

The win improved the 28-year-old's record to 40-2 with 33 knockouts while the 31-year-old Castillo fell to 52-7-1 with 46 knockouts.
